Free The Children (Blog Assignment #3)

July 18, 2009

www.freethechildren.com

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it--always.

---Mahatma Gandhi

This quote by Gandhi and this picture I believe go hand in hand. The picture of all the children coming together is really moving. It shows that everyone can make a difference, when we join together as one, fighting for one cause, wanting one goal. This can be accomplished when everyone gives a little of themselves.

I believe so many hardships and problems would be abolished if we all showed some care and love. People run around so busy with there own lives, so self centered that they don’t even notice what’s going on around them, they don’t see the bigger picture.

That’s why I chose this picture, I think it portrays the message I’m trying to support. People locked together, working together as one, will accomplish so much more.

Try not to get too wrapped up in your own lives; don’t forget the tragedy that’s going on around the block or around the world. People die daily from malnourishment and we throw out half our plates of food? It doesn’t make any sense.

I encourage everyone to take a moment out of their day to be thankful for what they have and to give to others who aren’t as well off.

Visit Calgary, Alberta (MTC-W Special Assignment #2)

July 14, 2009

I’m Taralyn Wolfe, the reigning Miss Teen Calgary-World 2009. I’m 18 years old, and just graduated high school. I’m a cheerleader for the Calgary Stampeders Football Team (CFL) and a dancer. I have lived in Calgary for 6 years, and I love it! It’s such an honor to be an ambassador for such a great city! After reading this brochure you will without a doubt want to visit Calgary!

www.taralynwolfe.onsugar.com

Calgary is most famously known for the greatest outdoor show on earth, the Calgary Stampede! It runs every July for ten days and it’s a giant outdoor carnival. There are professional rodeos going on for the entire time, and there are rides and games to entertain families. The entire city dresses western, and everyone comes together for the fun of Stampede. Performers come from all around the world to perform on the outdoor stage, The Coke Stage. There is a dance and singing show every night put on by the Young Canadians, a youth performing troupe. From cotton candy to deep fried oreos all the way to rollercoasters, the Stampede is an event you don’t want to miss!

Calgary is also known for the 2008 Grey Cup champions, the Calgary Stampeders. In 2008 they beat the Montreal Alouettes to bring home the Grey Cup! This season the Grey Cup Championship and celebrations are being held in Calgary, and the Stampeders are going to try and win the cup again. This football season, there are ten home games which will be held at McMahon Stadium. Tickets are range from 29-49$. Attending a football game is an excellent family outing, there is something for everyone! For the girls in your family there are the Calgary Stampeder Outriders, the dance/cheer squad for the Stampeders, and then there is the football game for the men. So come on down and cheer on the Grey Cup Champs!

Just outside of Calgary, about an hour away, there is the town of Banff. You can see the mountains and Rockies from Calgary, so it would be a lovely trip to visit. The town of Banff has little shops running down either side of the main street. A main attraction Banff has to offer is the hot springs. It is a man made pool that is filled with natural mineral water that is as hot as a hot tub, but the temperature is completely natural! Banff offers beautiful sight seeing, and breath taking views, and it can almost be guaranteed that you will see wildlife!

NWL

July 08, 2009

Today I went and asked the dress shop, NWL to sponsor me with cocktail dresses for the pageant. They gave me two beautiful dresses that I cannot wait to wear.

NWL is also the place were I bought my evening gown for the pageant.

Also, I had my interview on Global news, and I will be appearing on the show next week! I only had 1 minute for my interview therefore I had to make it short and sweet.

This Sunday, I will be featured in our community newspaper the ‘Sunday Sun’ and feature about the pageant and myself.

Only 11 more days until Toronto, I'm so excited to meet everyone!

June 29, 2009

The pageant is only three weeks away and I'm busy preparing. On Friday I called the local newspaper, The Sunday Sun and had an interview. I also talked to local television programs so I can promote the up coming national pageant!

Life is busy as everything is sliding into place in my preparation, I'm just thankful its finally summer and the weather is warm.

Graduation

June 26, 2009

My graduation was this past weekend and it was an amazing, memorable time. It made me reflect on my life and the impact others have made in it. My parents have defiantly been huge role models to me and I'm so grateful for their unconditional love. Also my friends have been such a huge part of my high school years, going through the good and bad with them. Having to say good bye to most of them, as they are moving away for school, was defiantly hard.

The ceremonies in the very attractive matching gowns (I’m being sarcastic!) were exciting, I graduated with a 90% average, achieving distinction, which was a goal I set out for myself at the beginning of the school year. I also was awarded the Drama Academic Award and the Barker Award (for having high extra-circular points while being on honor role).

The last bit of grad was the Banquet, when every girl dresses up in dresses that made them feel like beautiful princesses. The day of banquet was a flawless day, everything about it was charming and perfect.

Yesterday I held a taco in a bag sale at my school to raise money for Free the Children.

It was a great success and so many kids came out to support the cause.

I really tried to promote the fact the its children helping children and I think that came across. Plus my amazing friends and family helped me out with this event so it was such a relief!

Miss Teen Regina - World

May 26, 2009

I took part in the Miss Teen Saskatchewan Pageant in April. Along with many beautiful girls, I was fortunate enough to be chosen to move on to the national pageant in July. My official title is Miss Teen Regina - World and take pride in the fact that I can be an ambassador for my city.

I have always watched 'Miss Amercia' on T.V. and dreamt about being a part of it. That dream came true this year when I saw the link on facebook. Miss Teen Canada - World has given the opportunity to empower today's young women and I am honoured to be a finalist.

Throughout my reign I shall keep you updated on whats going on with the pageant and myself. Thank you for your support and please visit the official Miss Teen Canada - World site where you can become more involved and informed about the pageant! http://www.missteencanadaworld.com/
